The Raid on Zeebrugge
- Scene: Planned to neutralise the key Belgian ports of Zeebrugge and Ostend, both used by the German Navy as a base for submarines and light shipping, the Raid on Zeebrugge was launched early on the morning of 23 April 1918.
- Belligerents: UK vs. German Empire
- Tactics and Losses: The attack began with a diversion of an old cruiser, and a smokescreen was deployed to hide the landing marines of the UK. However, the cruiser and other ships failed. The failure of the attack on the Zeebrugge mole resulted in heavy German fire on the three blocking ships, HMS Thetis, Intrepid and Iphigenia, which were filled with concrete. Thetis did not make it to the canal entrance, after it had hit an obstruction and was scuttled prematurely. The two other ships were sunk at the narrowest point of the canal. There was limited success but blockade last only a couple of days, a true German victory. UK Casualties: 583 and German Casualties: 24
